Dust Of Life throws us straight in the gritty reality of displaced teens living in Westminster, California during the early 1990’s as they struggle to find a home in suburbia America and accept the love they are given.

The film is premiering Friday, November 6, 2009, 6PM at the STAR Performing Arts Center in Fountain Valley , CA .  All proceeds from the premiere will be donated to the Vietnamese American Cancer Foundation (VACF) and Project MotiVATe (Mentoring Vietnamese American Teens).  Its regular engagement starts November 7 in Fountain Valley and November 13 in San Jose .

“Personally, I think Dust of Life illustrates a piece of our history.  I’m glad that the story is being told so that hopefully we can learn from the experience,” said Dr. Bich-Lien Nguyen, VACF Board of Directors. “We’re very thankful to be a benefiting charity of the premiere night, along with Project MotiVATe.”

"Dust of Life not only speaks to the issues affecting Vietnamese youth in years past, but serves as a bridge to facilitate dialogue and discussion among the Vietnamese youth of today," said Julie Vo, External Program Director of Project MotiVATe. “When I first saw this film at a screening, I recall being struck by how relevant Dust of Life is to our community and the younger generation.  For some youth, the film boldly reflects their own stories and experiences and for others, it provides an opportunity to talk to them about the underlying issues they are facing today.”

SYNOPSIS:

Dust of Life is a coming of age story set in the urban backdrop of Orange County in the early 1990’s.  “Dust of Life” is a term labeled for kids who have been left abandoned on the streets.  The film follows a displaced juvenile named Johnny, who, as an infant, lost both of his parents to the treacherous ordeal of the Boat People Exodus.  Growing up in America , Johnny quickly finds the harsh reality of assimilation when his choices are limited.  His situation becomes more desperate when his relationship with the street kids around his neighborhood becomes more perilous.  As hope seems more distant than ever for Johnny, a compassionate Catholic priest, helps him come to terms with his past in order to do the right thing in the present.

  • CocoParis LLC Announces Distribution of Dust of Life

Westminster, CA – September 22, 2009 – Coco Paris LLC, a distribution media company based in California, announces today that it has entered into a distribution agreement to theatrically release “Dust Of Life”, a film Production from Tale End Productions, this Fall 2009. The release will cover the following territories: San Jose, CA -Houston and Dallas, Texas – Falls Church, Virginia – New Orleans, Louisiana - Orange County, CA.

The journey of six years to bring the story to the wide screen, Dust of Life is a motion picture about displaced teens in the new Vietnamese enclave of Little Saigon in the early 90s, directed by Le-Van Kiet, a Vietnamese American filmmaker. Based on actual events, it is a careful portrait of the Vietnamese American experience that deals with adolescence in conflict with their identity as they are forced to assimilate and cope after a haunting exodus from their homeland.

“We believe that there is a real need to bring Dust of Life to a wide audience,” said Dan Tran, President of Coco Paris LLC. “It is a privilege for me to be able to share the film’s exploration of an important and complex period in many of our lives.  I am proud to support the ongoing and robust Vietnamese American film industry.”

    Filmmaker’s Statement

I have always believed that the story about young Vietnamese Immigrants in the early 1990’s in Little

Saigon is a powerful story that needed to be told.  For my first film directorial debut this was the only story I wanted to tell.  In the process of telling this story I found myself crossing boundaries and eventually exploring universal themes about displacement and the struggles of assimilation. It has been an incredible journey bringing the story from script to screen and now theaters across the States, a journey that has taken me six years.  As a Vietnamese American I feel blessed to be able to tell important stories that speak volume about my heritage and culture. And as a filmmaker I feel privileged to have an audience see the result.  Bringing a film to an audience has proven a difficult task and it takes a community to come together for it to work.  I am excited to be part of a distribution relationship that understands the sensibilities of the film and is able to target the market for a wider audience.

Mr. Do (Chi Pham) has raised his kids to be good Catholics and to live up to his unrealistic expectations. His son Ty (David Huynh) is abandoning pre-med to chase a less practical dream, while Linh (Yvonne Truong) is keeping her fiancé’s Buddhist background a secret. However, they aren’t the only kids with secrets in the Do family. It’s time Dad faces the truth that his kids have grown up.

Delightfully hilarious, yet mixed with great tenderness and humanism, ALL ABOUT DAD addresses the familiar theme of old world father vs. new world kids with deftness and originality. It’s a masterful family portrait that’s sure to resonate with any family.
